My beloved in the Lord,
God Almighty commands everyone everywhere to worship Him for Who He is. WORSHIP is the duty of every creature who is made in His own image. Father God is greatly concerned about the kind of worship we offer to Him. Jesus declared to the Samaritan woman that God is Spirit and He went on to say in John 4:24, “And those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” Idolatry is a form of worship that involves what Apostle Paul called “exchanged the truth for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen” (Romans 1:25).

God is not pleased with any form of worship. False worship is a terrible insult to Him Who is ALMIGHTY. Worship that is neither spiritual nor true is not acceptable. Unacceptable worship to God appears in Genesis 4:4,5 – “But Abel brought fat portions from some of the first-born of his flock. He looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but Cain and his offering He did not look with favor…” Abel’s worship was grounded in obedience to God’s way of doing things.

The more we know God, the more we understand how WORTHY GOD is of our worship. The story of the woman who broke a very expensive alabaster jar of perfume and poured it on Jesus’ feet is recorded in Luke 7:36-50. The Pharisees were angry that Jesus would allow such a sinful woman to touch Him. To Jesus, she was demonstrating TRUE WORSHIP. It cost her money; perhaps her entire life’ savings to purchase the jar of perfume. It cost her time to seek out Jesus and spend time at His feet. It cost her dignity to wash His feet with her tears and her hair and to kiss Him repeatedly. Costliness itself is not ultimately what God is after. After all, He owns everything we have. Our willingness to give costly worship is an indication of our heart attitude. Jesus clearly said in Matthew 6:12, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” When we are willing to give to the Lord things that we adore, we are telling Him that He is more important to us than those things.
Ultimately, God is most interested in our hearts. He does not want us to worship Him in a reluctant way. The Bible says that God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). He is not interested in just the act of giving, unless it is a true expression of our heart. So, giving to the Lord out of a heart filled with gratitude and praise is truly an act of worship that God delights. May we be willing to sacrifice our time, our finances and whatever is most precious to honor and glorify God.

Shalom in Jesus’ love,
Pastor Brian Chua
