Calvary greetings to you in the blessed name of Jesus Christ our Saviour, Amen!

THE MINISTRY OF COUNSELLING

The greatest trust between man and man is trust of giving counsel.
He that will not be counseled cannot be helped.
Get a good counsel before you begin and when you have decided, act promptly.

Proverbs 11:14 / 15:22 / 1 Kings 3:5, 9, 11-12, 16-28 / Daniel 2:1-11 / Genesis 41:14-36 /
Proverbs 4:7-9 / Numbers 27:1-11 / Isaiah 9:6 / John 3:1-21 / James 1:5 / Matthew 7:7 / Jeremiah 29:13

More grace means more death to self. More life means more submission. More revelation means more humility.

The ministry of counselling is an important and an integral part of the overall ministry of the pastor.
No pastor can fully accomplish his calling in ministry without paying attention to the counselling of individual members of his flock.
Unlike preaching and teaching, which are mainly done on the pulpit and praying which is done mainly in the closet,

  • Counselling involves a direct and personal interaction between the pastor and individuals.

  • Counselling is necessary especially when people need guidance in life, direction in their career, light in discouraging situation or despondency and help in times of trouble.

The world is full of confusion and crisis; consequently, people of every class, status and society are in need of help and direction through counselling.
Good, godly and wise counselling are therefore necessary in the church.

A. IMPORTANCE OF THE MINISTRY OF COUNSELLING

The importance of counselling has been clearly and powerfully stated in both negative and positive forms.
Example: “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Prov 11:14).
This could mean that without good counselling in the church, believers can be overwhelmed by their problems and confusions.
If there is no counselling, the believers may get discouraged and disappointed and may fall out of faith.

“Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established” (Prov 15:22).
This is to say that through the ministry of counselling, they are helped to overcome the problems of life and continue in faith.

Biblical Examples Of The Ministry Of Counselling

  • Through the counselling of Jesus, Nicodemus the great but confused religious teacher was saved (John 3:1-21).
  • Through the godly counsel and wisdom of king Solomon, the living child of the harlot was not destroyed (1 Kings 3:12-28)
  • Through the godly counsel of Daniel the prophet, the lives of the wise men in the kingdom were saved, including that of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (Daniel 2:1-45).
  • Through the godly counsel of Joseph, Egypt and the known world was saved from seven years of famine (Genesis 41:14-36).

In view of all these, we must take the ministry of counselling very seriously.

To be continued.

Remain blessed and rapturable,
Yours to reach this generation with the Gospel,

Dr. Daniel O. C.
