THE MINISTRY OF COUNSELLING (CONT’D)
How To Be Effective In The Counselling Ministry
To be effective in the counselling ministry, we must:
- Have a sound spiritual experience of salvation, sanctification, and baptism in the Holy Ghost.
- Possess a deep and balanced knowledge of the word of God (Joshua 1:8 / Psalms 119:105-106).
- Have a shepherd heart that perpetually seeks to offer sacrificially for the believers’ welfare.
- Develop empathy for the hurting and confused.
- We must be firm and steady in keeping the standard of God’s word.
- Be available for the members to see and also be accessible to them.
- Seek and possess the divine wisdom of God.
B. NEED AND NECESSITY FOR GOD’S WISDOM IN COUNSELLING
(Proverbs 4:7-9)
This passage of the Scripture tells us of the importance of wisdom in everything that is to be done, including counselling. Wisdom is necessary:
- Because of the complicated nature of the people, we deal with.
- Because of the intricate nature of counselling cases that one encounters.
- Because many counselling cases are traps set to catch or find fault with the pastor.
- Because some counselling cases have demonic origins (Matthew 17:14-27).
- Because most of the problems that push people to seek for counselling have direct links to their lives and destiny.
- Because spiritual experiences and scriptural knowledge alone may not meet the need of many people who come with complicated cases.
Wisdom of God is needed to apply knowledge and experience appropriately to meet the needs of the people in counselling.
God is the greatest counsellor. He is wonderful in counsel (Isaiah 28:29 / 46:29).
God is great in counsel and mighty in working (Jeremiah 32:19). Therefore, He alone can help us to give wise and appropriate counsel to people in every circumstance and situation.
Without wisdom of God, we will only be a miserable counsellor (Job 16:2).
Without wisdom of God, our counselling will complicate people’s problems.
We will become blind guides (Matthew 23:16, 24).
God is not pleased with those who give or take counsel without first seeking His face (Isaiah 30:1).
To be continued.
Remain blessed and rapturable,
Yours to reach this generation with the Gospel,
Dr. Daniel O. C.
