Dear worshippers of the Most High,
In Luke 11:29–32, the people asked Jesus for a sign, yet they were already standing before the greatest Sign of all—the Son of God Himself. They had Light in their midst, but they refused to respond to it. Jesus then said, “The lamp of the body is the eye” (v. 34). What we allow our eyes to see and how we respond to the light God gives us determine whether our lives are filled with light or darkness.

The danger is that we can have religious light without spiritual reality. In Jesus’ day, some trusted in their traditions, rituals and self-righteousness while rejecting Christ Himself.

Consider the rich young ruler (Mark 10:17–22). He had much reason to feel confident about his spiritual condition. He had kept the commandments from his youth. Yet when Jesus exposed what was really in his heart, his possessions stood between him and wholehearted obedience. His treasure revealed his heart: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

We can fall into the same trap. We attend Sunday services faithfully. We tithe. We serve. We give generously. We conduct ourselves honourably. We may even tick many religious boxes. But beneath all these good things, are there hidden idols that we have never surrendered? Are we continually responding to the light God has shown us through His Word?

Be careful about the darkness that can exist within us while we think that we are in the light.
As Christians, we are to yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to conform us to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). We must not knowingly make peace with sin. “Those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Galatians 5:24).
Church attendance must never become a substitute for repentance and obedience. God will not overlook what He has said He will judge. Scripture gives sobering warnings to those who profess Christ yet deliberately persist in sin:
“For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries” (Hebrews 10:26-27).

Idolatry: Idolaters will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9–10).

Sexual immorality: Those who practise adultery, fornication and uncleanness will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19–21).

Unforgiveness: “If you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:15).

Deception and lying: “All liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 21:8).

The warning is not meant to drive us into despair, but into honest repentance and holy living. “The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.” (Romans 13:12)
