“GUIDE TO PROPER DECORUM”
Saints of God Most High, hear God’s word for you today:
“What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.” (Deuteronomy 12:32)
Whatever the Holy word of God commands you, be watchful to do it; you shall not add to it or diminish it. Obedience beings untold blessings.
GUIDE TO PROPER DECORUM
A common definition sees decorum as proper behaviour while a more specific definition is given by the Webster’s dictionary as “conformity with conventional social manners in speech, writing, dressing and behaviour”.
Irrespective of the definition, either common or specific, proper decorum can be said to describe the totality of an individual’s personality.
It is expected that the behaviour of a child should be moulded through an institution such as home, school, church and the community. This will help to produce desirable and acceptable behavioural characteristics in such a child as he grows up.
As one becomes an adult, whatever behavioural traits he or she has developed remains with him or her for life. Human beings are peculiar creatures whose attitudes are expected to conform to the norms of the society.
We as born-again Christians must remain different in this world for God’s glory in these following areas:
- Language
The way you speak goes a long way to show who you are. A believer should be able to control his or her tongue. He or she should not be a talebearer or a false witness. His or her speech should be seasoned with grace and love.
The well of our tongue should be springs of life to people around us (Proverbs 17:27/Colossians 4:6).
- Dressing
A godly person should be decent and moderate in his or her dressing. Your attire should not conform to worldly standards that tend towards flamboyance and arrogance.
Wear dresses that cover your nakedness, for that is the reason of dressing. Do not dress to expose your nakedness, seduce or to cause others to fall into lust. Neat, smart and comfortable wears are ideal for a Christian man and woman.
- Inter-personal relationships
Be humble, hospitable and humorous but not a jester. When you put your life under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit, He will mould your character in such a way that your life will produce the fruit of the Spirit as enumerated in Galatians 5:22-23.
In this way, you will become a reference point for people around you. Then you will be a tool in the hand of God to bring souls into His kingdom.
- Work
A Christian believer should not be idle. Do not be a busybody who carries the latest news from one house to the other. You are not called to be DHL or Federal Express or CNN news carrier but you are called to be an intercessor. You should be engaged in the profitable business of God.
Take proper care of your spouse, children, home, ministry or department where you belong and the church work you are involved with. Plan your time and activities well. Be a good time manager.
Above all, let the true love of God be shown in your life as you relate with members of your family, housemaids, co-workers, friends, pastors, servants of God and neighbours.
TAKE HEED TO GOD’S WORD FOR YOUR GOOD IN JESUS’ MIGHTY NAME, AMEN!
Sabbath shalom and good morning.
