Dear worshippers of the Most High,
The counsel from the Lord in the days of the prophet Jeremiah is very applicable today. As in the days of Jeremiah, we are also living in the midst of much deception from the very ones who should be warning the people. There were false ministers who manufactured dreams, visions, and prophecies. Similar to those days, the people love to have it so (Jeremiah 5:31). They did not want to hear the hard truth that their sins had opened the door for the Babylonian captivity. Instead, they preferred comforting words over convicting truth, crying, “Peace, peace,” when judgment was at the door (Jeremiah 6:14).
In our days, some have to pay good money so as to receive a personal “word from the Lord” (2 Corinthians 2:17). There are others who heap up teachers to hear what they want to hear – “Prosperity! Prosperity!” (1 Kings 22:13, 2 Timothy 4:3). Paul the apostle warned us of those who will perish in the days of the lawless one. These perish because they did not receive the love of the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10). They have access to the truth, yet they do not love it enough to apply it.
The “old paths” are not outdated traditions but the timeless ways of repentance, reconciliation, obedience, and wholehearted love for God. They are ancient because they are eternal. They are narrow, yet they lead to life, to God’s presence, and to rest for the soul.
1. Stand and see
Pause and examine our own life (2 Corinthians 13:5). Are we drifting? We must give earnest heed lest we slip (Hebrews 2:1). Has our love grown cold? (Matthew 24:12). Self-examination guards the heart and brings us back to the Lord.
2. Ask for the old paths
Jesus declared that He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). When we seek Him with all our hearts, we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13; Mt 7:7). The good way is not merely a principle—it is a Person.
3. Walk in it
Hearing truth is not enough; we must live it. Walk with the wise and we will become wise (Proverbs 13:20). As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17). Choose fellowship and friendships that encourage righteousness, holiness, and purity.
4. Find rest
The promise is sure: “You will find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16). This rest is deeper than temporary relief. It is peace with God, confidence in His sovereign rule, and assurance of His abiding presence.
May we not answer, “We will not walk in it,” but instead say, “Lord, lead us in Your good way.”
Maranatha!
