WHY WE SING JOYFULLY UNTO THE LORD

He who sings drives away sorrow. Those who wish to sing will always find a song.
Families without songs are unhappy families. A song will outlive sermons in the memory.

Everyone understands what singing is all about. Singing breaks the racial boundaries. Singing invades all territories and its language is universal. Singing cuts across races, tribes, demography, geography and it is multi-cultural. Most creatures, animals included respond to music, especially when expressed in songs. In the Holy Bible, songs play a prominent role in worship.

  • Songs are introduced as part of worship session.
  • Songs are also used on occasions of thanksgiving.
  • Songs express the state of the mind.

  • “Sing aloud unto God our strength. Make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob” (Psalms 81:1).
  • “O come, let us sing unto the Lord. Let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation” (Psalms 95:1).
  • “You shall have a song as in the night” (Isaiah 30:29).

  • “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit and understanding. I will sing with the spirit and also with understanding” (1 Corinthians 14:15).
  • “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Ephesians 5:19).
  • “Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any merry, let him sing psalms” (James 5:13).

Holy songs in true worship are indicative of inner joy and peace in the presence of God.
When singing first appeared in the Holy Scriptures, it was a part of merry making in connection with entertaining guests and loved ones (Genesis 31:27). As a religious rite, songs first appeared in the Book of Exodus when Moses and all Israel rejoiced at the disgraceful overthrow of the Egyptians (Exodus 15:1-5).

Moses the great prophet also taught Israel some of his last warnings in a song (Deuteronomy 31:30-32:1-4). David was received by women of Israel after his victory over Goliath with songs (1 Samuel 18:6-7). Barzillai mentioned about singing men and women (2 Samuel 19:35). King David had a trained choir. Jesus our Lord also sang a hymn just before He went to the cross (Matthew 26:30).

THE BIBLE CONFIRMS THAT:

  • There were ancient choirs regularly employed in the Old Testament (1 Chronicles 9:33).
  • This choirs is assisted by an orchestra (1 Chronicles 15:16).
  • Ancient choirs were led by presenter (1 Chronicles 15:27).
  • God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters who participated in the great choir (1 Chronicles 25:5-7).
  • A militant choir led to victory in the battle (2 Chronicles 20:21).

Beloved saints of the living God, it is a blessing to know that

  • Songs release tensions and unburden the heart.
  • Songs minister and refresh our entire being.
  • Godly songs tune us heavenward.
  • Songs brighten the countenance and beam hope into all our horizons.

When we sing unto the Lord, a bright new page of life unfolds.
Any time you are sad or joyful, sing unto the Lord your Maker.
May the Almighty God, the Creator of heaven and earth, the Ancient of Days and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ put a new song in your mouth today for His glory in Jesus’ name Amen!

Remain blessed and rapturable,

Yours to reach this generation with the Gospel,

Dr. Daniel O. C.
