DEVELOPING EVANGELISM FOR THE POOR

Matthew 28:19-20 / Mark 16:15-16 / John 20:21 / Acts 16:5

In every society or nation, there are people who probably because of their environment and the conditions of their living are not reckoned with.
They are looked down on, despised, rejected and neglected.
These people can be referred to as the poor in the society.
It is interesting to know that God loves and cares for them.
1 Samuel 2:8 confirms God’s concern for the poor.
John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”. “Whoever” in this passage includes the poor.

As obedient children of God who have the mind of Christ,
it is our responsibility to ensure that they are established in the Lord by planting churches close to them.
There is a church among the poor and the heathen; go and plant it – that is your calling.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POOR

The poor has some peculiarities which are common to them. These are:

Poverty – they live in penury and sometimes find it difficult to meet their needs. The widow of Zarephath in 1 Kings 17:12 is a good example of poor in the scriptures.
Idolatry and superstition (Acts 17:16-22).
Oppression – The well to do in the society often oppress the poor (2 Kings 4:1-6).
Poor educational background and ignorance of the knowledge of God (Ephesians 4:18 / Hosea 4:6).

Over population. Some of them have many children. They live in overcrowded rooms with little ventilation. Their children become wayward and could be involved in immoral activities.
Premature death – often times, this is a result of ignorance, superstition, and poverty.
Sickness because of poor nutrition and unhealthy environment.
Insecurity

Deprivation – The society deprives them of their rights because of their ignorance.
Communal spirit and gullibility to do things in common and can be persuaded to believe anything. This is why they are easily deceived by false prophets and teachers.
They desire to improve their conditions. Majority of the poor live in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

In obedience to the Great Commission, we must penetrate the poor and win them for Christ.
The poor need love, care, friendship, and knowledge about who God is and what He can do.
We need wisdom to carry the gospel to the poor.
We must be all things to all men by being lovable, approachable, and adaptable (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).

To be continued.

Remain blessed and rapturable,
Yours to reach this generation with the Gospel,

Dr. Daniel O. C.
