WOW – 25 October 2023: Effective Scriptural Counselling

| Oct 25, 2023

Calvary greetings to you in the blessed name of Jesus Christ our Saviour, Amen!

He who does not dare will not get his share.

There is nothing in the world so admired as a man who knows how to bear unhappiness with courage.

Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the Lord.

Isaiah 9:6

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Effective and scriptural counselling is a special but not a separate area of a minister’s activity.

Scriptural counselling is close to the heart of shepherding.

It involves the extension of help to the wandering, the torn, defeated and dispirited people who need restoration.

Counselling is one of the important ministries of Jesus to His church (Ps 23:3). “Souls’ restoration” is only possible through biblical counselling.

A good leader or minister is an instrument used by God to heal and strengthen the weak and the hurting.

We must show the right path to those at the crossroads.

The goal of every leader should be to “seek that which was lost and bring again that which was driven away” (Ezk 34:16).

It is mandatory for every faithful minister to know how to offer help through counselling.

Counselling is the potent means by which change in wrong beliefs, attitude and behaviour is brought about by practical use of the scriptures in order to honour God and bless the counsellee.

Jesus who lives in us is called the Great Counsellor while the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of counsel.

The consequences of ineffective and unscriptural counselling are disastrously devastating and painful (Ezk 34:4-5 / Zech 11:16).

This makes counselling a delicate ministry to be handled only by the grace of God.

Counselling can help or hinder, build up or break down the ignorant counsellee seeking the way to the kingdom.

1.              DESCRIPTION OF BALANCED COUNSELLING

(Prov 11:14 / 15:22 / 13:10 / 12:15 / 20:18)

“Counselling is a divine conversation, while ministry is a divine action”, says Tim Pain.

The Bible clearly states that human beings are limited in their knowledge and understanding.

Everybody needs counselling. Counsel is defined as consultation or advice.

But balanced counsel is best described as a step in the progress of leading people in the path of righteousness for God’s sake.

Balanced counselling is a gradual process of leading believers in the path of life and for expansion of God’s kingdom.

Balanced counselling belongs to God. God knows the best course of action to take in any situation.

No human counsel can survive the test of time. Only the counsel of the Lord can stand forever (Ps 33:11).

A good leader should always look up to God and make the counsellee take decisions that are in harmony with God’s purpose and will.

Effective counselling has its root in the Word of God (Isa 11:1-3).

The Characteristics Of An Effective Counselling

Wisdom and Skill: Ability to know the right thing to say and do, guiding in the way that will please God.

Understanding and Insight: Knowing what the problems are and having an insight into possible solutions.

Counsel / Advice: Knowledge of the scripture and logical presentation of instructions bring about positive responses.

Might / Authority: Effective counselling will not leave the counsellee confused, dejected or rejected, but makes the person sound and bold.

Knowledge: Knowing the truth of every matter and getting to its heart.

Fear / Reverence: The counsellor and the counsellee are aware they are under the hand of God.

To be continued.

Remain blessed and rapturable,

Yours to reach this generation with the Gospel,

Dr. Daniel O. C.
